Single Player

Resources
You will need resources to build your village.
There are currently eight resources in Clash of Clans.
A Gold Mine is required to collect golds and a Gold Storage is required to store the golds.
As for gems, they can be collected in various ways but the easiest one is to purchase them.
Gems can be used to speed up building anything, especially for upgrades.
Defense
There are many types of defensive buildings you could build to defend your village from attacks.
Cannon, Archer Tower, Mortar, Air Defense, and Hidden Tesla are just a few to name.
