Townscaper doesnt impose any restriction on what you want to build.
It has no rule to follow.
Whatever building structures you have in your mind, you are free to create them.
The said objects are blocks.
What you better do is to tap a block and drop it on a location.
The block will transform into a shape automatically according to where you drop it.
If you place a block on water, the block will turn into a platform automatically.
If you drop a block on the platform, it may turn into a house.
A block unit does not change into a random shape.
Instead, it turns into a shape or a structure that fits together with the structures around it.
