What is Wake-on-LAN?

One outcome of their combined efforts was an Ethernet standard called Wake-on-LAN (WoL).

This guide was built around Windows PCs connected to the same connection, via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

If you’re not sure, check the manufacturer’s website and look for WoL support in the specifications.

Press theWindows key+Xor right-smack the Start menu icon selectDevice Managerfrom the list.

SelectPropertiesand thenPower Management check all of the options it’s possible for you to see here.

You might also need to enable theWake on Magic Packetoption in the Advanced tab.

But let’s take a look at some Windows-based software, first.

connection Scanneris a good app for handling WoL actions.

It’s not the most modern-looking piece of software nor absolutely novice-friendly, but it’s rich in features.

Here, you’ll see the option to send the WoL signal to fire up the PC.

However, they tend to be rather sparse in terms of features and functionality.

This involves opening a port to allow it to pass on (i.e.

forward) the packet.

You may need to reboot the router after you’ve set the forwarding, for it to work properly.

Routers can be rather picky about forwarding magic packets from the internet.

However, many brands and models won’t let you do it at all.
